Halloween CER Activity: The Case of the Missing Candy Corn

$3.99

The candy corn jar was full on Thursday. Friday morning, it’s half empty. Somebody’s guilty! This Halloween CER mystery breaks claim, evidence, and reasoning into three separate jobs so students practice one skill at a time, with built-in supports so every student can take part.

Description

This Halloween CER activity turns the chaos of Halloween week into real science thinking. Costumes, class parties, and a sugar rush that starts at the bus loop? If your students are going to be bouncing off the walls anyway, they might as well be thinking like scientists while they do it.

The Case of the Missing Candy Corn is a low-prep CER mystery that teaches claim, evidence, and reasoning one job at a time. Instead of asking students to do all three at once (and watching them drown), each part gets its own time and its own focus.

How This Halloween CER Activity Works

Job 1, Claim (5 minutes): Students decide who or what took the candy corn. No proving yet. Let them be dramatic about it. They will be.
Job 2, Evidence (10 minutes): Students pick the evidence card that backs them up and write what they observed, not what they think.
Job 3, Reasoning (10 minutes): Students explain how their evidence proves their claim using the frame “This shows ___ because ___.”

Because every student solves the same mystery, you can compare claims as a class. When two students look at the same sticky handprint and pick two different suspects, that isn’t wrong. That’s real science thinking, and it’s the conversation that makes reasoning click.

Built for inclusion:

Every student deserves a seat at the table. This resource includes picture evidence cards for students who need visuals, partner role cards (Detective and Evidence Collector), and a supported recording sheet with the claim already filled in, so no one gets stuck on step one.
