Description

Frostbite & Folly is the perfect winter activity for middle and high school students who need something fun, engaging, and totally non-holiday themed. With 22 creative, winter-based scenarios, students will think, discuss, collaborate, debate, and laugh while working through the ridiculous situations presented on each slide. Each prompt pushes students to use critical thinking, problem-solving, imagination, and communication skills. It’s the ideal low-prep activity for December, brain breaks, advisory, ELA warm-ups, sub days, early-finishers, or anytime you need meaningful engagement without extra planning. This resource works beautifully for ALL content areas, and it includes a built-in ELA writing extension. Students can verbally respond OR turn their scenario solution into a short written response, quickwrite, character POV response, or mini-narrative — perfect for hitting writing standards without the pressure of a full assignment.

❄️ HOW TO DO THE ACTIVITY (45–60 MINUTES)

This activity is designed to run 45–60 minutes, depending on how many slides you choose. Here’s the recommended structure:

1. Group Students (2–4 per group)
Students work best in partners or small groups so they can discuss and collaborate.

2. Project the Slides
Show 1 scenario at a time. Each prompt includes built-in questions to guide thinking.

3. Discussion Time (2–3 minutes per slide)
Groups read the scenario together and talk through their answers. They should be:

  • creative

  • logical or illogical (their choice!)

  • funny-but-appropriate

  • detailed

4. Share Out (1–2 minutes)
Groups share their best idea, theory, or explanation with the class.

5. Voting
Students vote on the most creative answer for that slide. The group with the most wins at the end.

6. Writing Extension (Optional, 5–10 minutes)
Turn any prompt into a quick ELA writing task. Students can:

  • Write a 3–5 sentence explanation of their solution

  • Turn the scenario into a short paragraph

  • Write from the POV of a character in the scenario

  • Turn it into a journal entry, police report, or mini-narrative
This makes the activity ELA-aligned while keeping it fun.
